To promote Gardeners' World magazine
to would-be advertisers, a mixture of
matter-of-fact and slightly off-the-wall
marketing tools were devised.
Initially a marketing pack was created
that gave the all-important financial
breakdown and healthy sales figures.
Then, to further involve the agencies
placing adverts, a conkers competition
was arranged, followed the next year
by a pumpkin carving competition.
Sourcing ripe pumpkins in a bad summer
then getting them printed on is no mean feat.
That's not to mention squeezing them all
into the studio fridge for storage
.
In the end, both were eagerly contested
and also given positive coverage in
Media Week.
